Dr. Cary T. Grayson, who would later work as President Woodrow Wilson's personal physician, graduated with his medical degree in 1904. He then served on staff at the US Naval Hospital in Washington, DC.

In 1905, Dr. Grayson joined the crew of the USS Maryland for a tour that would ultimately last for two and a half years. This was just as the Maryland set out for Cuba, and then transferred to Asia by way of the Suez Canal. In the end, they would go around the entire world.

Dr. Grayson kept a scrapbook of pictures from Japan, which he then used to store all of his photographs from the tour, interleaved among the pages.
